Round Five Home and Away Competition: Guildford V Hale at Home 31.05.18

"Don’t count your chickens before they hatch."

Round 5 of the home and away fixtures had the boys returning to their home course for the Thursday fixture prior to the midterm break. On paper this race should have been close and, all things being equal, was, likely to swing in favour of the Guildford squad. All things however, were not equal and Hale came over the top of the squad to deliver us with a 108 point defeat. Sadly, the boys were also outside of the 90-point margin that was required to earn a bonus point and well shy of the 60 points required for 2 bonus points.

This does not detract from the boys who raced this afternoon because I know that they gave it there all this afternoon. Sadly, the Year 11 and 12 exams robbed us of some key runners along with the Year 8 camp and the recent departure of Jacob Adams (11) and Ben Anderson (8). On conservative comparisons relative to times and places if these boys were on the line the squad was looking at a 22-point defeat and 3 bonus points. This only highlights the significant role that every lad plays in the bigger picture pertaining to the squad.

With only one home and away fixture to go before we move into the All School fixtures the boys still have a lot to do.

This afternoon’s race was taken out by a young year 7 runner from Hale, Tom Alexander. His time of 18min 38sec was very impressive given his age and should he stay with the sport, I am sure we will hear more from this young man, Nathan Kerman took the group out fast and had a rather commanding lead as he made his way across the far rugby ovals. Coming through the boatshed area at the end of the first lap however, this lead has been eaten away by a tight pack of 3 young Hale runners. These 4 boys were clear of 5th place at the of the race and it was evident from Kerman’s finish that he had emptied the tank. Given the wet and heavy condition of the course, his time was very impressive and got him very close to his personal bets which was set on a very dry course.

As has become the norm for the boys over the last few races, they again put themselves right up there in the mix. Two lads who continue to push each other to higher levels, as was evident with the personal best times they set today, once again worked together to keep themselves in the mix. Gabriel Boyd and Jack Connor took it right up to the wire with Boyd coming out of the final water hazard marginally ahead of Connor. He managed to hold this lead from Connor who chased him right to the line. I am really looking forward to seeing how these two athletes fair in the all school’s events.

Our Vice Captain, Sakellaris, also was impressive and is another runner who is making improvements every time he steps onto the track. Running a 19 second personal best he placed in the top 15 this afternoon, narrowly ahead of an exhausted Max Stewart. Stewart, new to the squad this year, has shown an ability to dig deep into his tank and race hard. Like so many of the squad the ability to climb through the field will be something he can rely on at this final 8km event in Kings Park.

Three boys who well and truly ran out of their skins this afternoon were Duke Gordon, Mason Hedland and Evan Overton. All three-recording personal best times of over 1 minute. The young Overton is slowly gaining more confidence in this senior competition as his fitness levels improve.

Now that the exams are over, the boys will be able to see some normality return to their training endeavours. Given that we are not competing for another two weeks, the sessions will be intense. The fact that we have 2 additional coaches in Aiden McLaughlin and Harry Langdon has added another dimension to the squad with these two young men helping our boys go that extra yard.

After 5 races, the GGS ranking has the boys sitting in the following positions. Once again, given that the sum of the boys’ best 5 of the 6 home and away races count towards their final points, this ranking is based on their best 4 placed events, dropping their worst event to date. This means in some cases the boys points have improved as they drop their worst placed performance. Points are based on their finishing position in the field as this is indicative of the points they earn on the day. The boys must complete 5 of the 6 home and away events as well as the 3km and 5km event to be eligible for the school trophies however to remain eligible for colours and a 1st cap, as well as contesting the All Schools 3km, 5km they must also context the final 8km event. Any Year 7,8,9 or 10 who finishes in the top 10 is also eligible for Senior Colours.
